ntroduction of Pediatric Dentistry

Pediatric (and adolescent) dentistry is a dental specialty that finds, diagnoses, prevents, and treats the problems of growth and development of oral cavity at the time of birth, childhood, and adolescence (0-17 years). Pediatric (and adolescent) dentists make great effort in treating children who are very young or not cooperative.

Adult dental diseases are closely related to oral health during childhood or adolescence and can be prevented. Oral healthcare in childhood is very important for life-long favorable oral health. Thus, it is necessary to teach children the importance of proper habits for oral hygiene, educate them regarding correct ways of tooth-brushing, and make them more accustomed to dental care settings. In that way, when the children are grown, they may still think positively about dental care.

In terms of restoring decayed teeth, the latest dental materials and therapeutic techniques have been introduced, which are effective in achieving patients’ greater satisfaction and quality of care. To enhance resistance of teeth to cavities, we are making strides in preventive care such as fluoridation and sealant.

Regular checkups are required to treat children with damage to their teeth and oral areas, with congenital heart and/or blood diseases, with physical or psychological disabilities. Treating children with these problems requires special attention. Therefore, appropriate dental care for those children is one of the main interests of our department.

Because children differ in developmental stages of their teeth, dental management according to stage is required. Damage to deciduous teeth may require special management considering developing permanent teeth. In order to induce development and growth of dentition and to minimize problems that may occur later, special attention and knowledge are necessary. Improper conditions of bone and dentition in children may affect the state of the subsequent permanent dentition and facial morphology after growth. Therefore, the aspects of early orthodontic therapies are being actively investigated.

Our department, for safer and more efficient treatment, is equipped with advanced devices such as gas sedation devices, patient monitoring equipment, and body control apparatuses and provides high-quality dental care with a variety of diagnosing devices and techniques.
